Construction Industry News and Views Edition 32 - July 2010
|
|
Dear Readers
In this edition we cover a variety of topics which include a warning against misrepresentation on the part of municipal officials and community liaison officers who falsely advocate that labour rates applicable to civil engineering, are also applicable to the building industry.
A strong opinion is expressed with regard to Eskom having purchased World Cup tickets amounting to R12.6 million, while economist Mike Schussler informs us that employment in the private sector has been crowded out by the public sector paying a premium for labour.
Members, staff, marketing partners and stakeholders are requested to participate in a new community project - Rampathon 2010. The project is to commence at the end of November and will run for two weeks, during which wheelchair ramps will be constructed at various locations across the province.
This project will benefit the communities in which our members work and will showcase the goodwill and community spirit of members of the Association. With a view to participating, we request that you give the Rampathon article particular attention.
Enjoy
Ernest Roper

False Representations - Circular To Members
Your association is concerned to note that there are an increasing number of reports being received that union officials, municipal officials and community liaison officers are making false representations that the minimum labour rate which is applicable to the civil engineering industry also applies to the building industry.

Invitation to participate in Rampathon Community Project
Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal is proud to announce the launch of a new community project - Rampathon 2010. Through this project we aim to build a number of wheelchair access ramps, across KwaZulu-Natal, for families and communities that would not normally be able to afford them.

12.6 Million New Reasons To Dislike Eskom
Eskom is truly a unique organization which differentiates itself by taking conventional business wisdom and implementing entirely the opposite. If there were a book titled "Best Business Practice for Dummies", it would no doubt clearly state that rule 1 of surviving difficult times is to cut back on unnecessary expenses and not to reward those who under perform.

Sick Leave - frequently asked questions
How does sick leave work?
It works on a 3 year annual cycle during which an employer is entitled to sick leave equal to the number of days he normally works in a 6 week period. During the first 6 months of employment an employee is only entitled to 1 day's sick leave for every 26 days worked.
