With the SPCA relying primarily on donations from the public, the building was designed to create usability without unnecessary cost implications. Low maintenance materials such as aluminum doors and windows as well as Zinc-alume sheeting, were purposely incorporated for long term sustainability.
The facility was designed as a simple series of lozenges to create pleasant courtyards. Besides allowing the building to “breathe”, the courtyards allow external activities to take place such as the adaptation lawn and tea garden.
Although the site is situated in the harsh environment of an industrial park, it borders on a canal linked to the Umgeni River. In order to maximize the sites potential, all buildings were purposely designed with large overhangs and verandas to the North.
HIGHLY COMMENDED PROJECTS | GOTTLIEB RHV, BY STEFFANUTTI STOCKS BUILDING KZN (PTY) LTD The project comprised of building a new distribution warehouse with offices formed of concrete slabs, blockwork as well as metal roof covering on top of structural steelwork. The external phase consisted of bulk earthworks, retaining walls, paving and landscaping. The contract took 10 and half months to complete and was concluded in November, 2008. The area which the warehouse occupies, is approximately 5000m2. From both the N2 and Nandi drive, this structure does not bear resemblance to a run of the mill warehouse, it instead exudes originality style. |
