WINNER
"Kokstad Private Hospital", by Owen Peters Construction
In order to assist in maintaining cool temperatures as well as to house a 30 000 liter water reservoir, the structure was purposely designed to incorporate a concrete roof sturdily supported on concrete beams.
Skylighting was also integrated to bring in natural light as well as to help save on electricity consumption.
Challenges that were successfully overcome:
- The majority of labour was unskilled
- Limited number of skilled carpenters available in the area.
- Materials unavailable locally had to be sourced from Durban and Johannesburg.
- Abnormal rainfall patterns resulted in delays.
Although the above posed real threats to the projected date of completion, many hours of overtime worked ensured that deadlines were timeously met.
HIGHLY COMMENDED PROJECTS
MIDLANDS MEDICAL CENTER, BY ROD'S CONSTRUCTION Midlands Medical Centre is a private hospital situated in the CBD of Pietermaritzburg, it has 5 operating theatres and houses 140 beds. The hospital’s facilities are utilized by 50 General Practitioners and 40 Specialists of all disciplines, including Dentists. Rods Construction was awarded “Highly Commended” recognition for completing alterations and additions, which include new pediatric wards, as well as theaters and ICU facilities. |
FIT OUT TO MIDLANDS MEDICAL CENTER (FOR ESKOM), BY ROD'S CONSTRUCTION Rods Construction was awarded “Highly Commended” recognition for additional work performed at the Midlands Medical Centre which involved fitting out the 5th and the 6th floor. |
 | ST LUCY'S HOSPITAL TSOLO, BY WBHO / AZCON JOINT VENTURE This new hospital complex is situated on the road to Tsolo, approximately 2.5 km from the N2, 430 km out of Durban. The structure is located below a mountain and earthworks for the site commenced in late November 2005. The project required that various buildings be constructed on platforms. There are 23 separate blocks in total which include the casualty department, maternity ward, theatre, mortuary and many others typical of a fully equipped modern day hospital facility. All blocks are linked by covered walkways. |
