2008 Awards - Alterations, Renovations and Additions

WINNER

"Polyoaks", by Stefanutti & Bressan Building (Pty) Ltd

When Polyoaks Packagind's existing premises in Pinetown became too small to accomodate it's requirements, it was time to call in the professionals and execute a major expansion. Operations Director Graeme Carver explained that the original structure comprised two seperate wwarehouses with basement storage, which was subsequently converted into one large unit, comprising a factory, offices and storage facilities.

as the business of the tenant in the basement of the building had to remain fully operational throughout the conversion, safety of the tenant's employees and the contractors was a top priority.

Polyoaks were more than satisfied with the outcome of the construction and the overall performance adding: "Stefanutti & Bressan did a great job. We would not use anyone else for further projects."

HIGHLY COMMENDED PROJECTS

"Bluff Meat Supply Hillcrest", by Valad Construction (Pty) Ltd
With 'fast track' being the ultimate requirement, Valad Construction was under pressure to complete this project within it's seven week deadline. The contract incorporated Bluff Meat Supply's 'standard finishes', as well as some new interior options. Adding another level of difficulty, the project was undertaken within an existing shopping center, and had to incorporate two existing shops into its body. To minimise any inconvenience to the existing tenants, construction access was limited to the rear of the building. Principal agent Bill Howell said that the client was most satisfied with Valad's performance. "Although relatively small, this project was fairly complex, situated within a confined are. Coordination of sub-contractors was critical to meet the deadline, but the end result was excellent."

"Bluff Meat Supply Pinetown", by Valad Construction (Pty) Ltd
Due to the operational nature of the existing production facility, conditions were extremely difficult in the development of the aforementioned project. This meant that most of the work had to be executed at night, which required a high level of planning and contract management. Amongst other tasks, the internal walls of the existing building had to be removed, many of which were supporting the roof structure. Steel beams then had to be introduced where the wall had been, to carry the roof structure while they continued building. The principal agent commended Valad Construction on its cooperative attitude and efficiency, thus ensuring an extremely desirable result.
