WINNER
"The New Biology building University of KZN", by Stefanutti & Bessan Building (Pty) Ltd
The new Biology Building on the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Westville Campus was completed by the end of 2007, in just over a year. The 12 000 square-meter, four-level building houses basement parking with offices and laboratories on the remaining floors.
Operations Director Graham Carver said that the off-shutter concrete design (which eliminated the need for plastering) used in the stairwells and lift shaft are of particular interest, achieving high quality finishes.
Full compliance with occupational health and safety issues was a major factor for this contract, and Stefanutti & Bressan's efforts were rewarded with a regional occupation health and safety award.
The principal agent remarked that Stefanutti and Bressan should be commended on their all-round work and delivery. "They delivered a very complex building on time and within budget, to the client's total satisfaction."
HIGHLY COMMENDED PROJECTS | "Nongama Primary School Extension" by MET Builders Nongama Primary School, situated in the small town of Nongama, northern KAN, can now boast eight new classrooms, a computer room, HOD offices, and administration block and a media center.
The judges commented that the contractor had delivered high building standards, achieved under difficult circumstances. Not only was the school fully operational during construction of the new facilities but the resources were very challenging. In addition, the project was constructed under the EPWP principles, where the contractor has to make use of local labour as much as possible, especially the youth, and females with dependants in the area. This meant having to train laborers from scratch on the site.
