WINNER

"Sappi Saiccor"  Amakhulu Project by Amakhulu Civils Joint Venture

Run as a joint venture between Group 5, Stefanutti, Grinaker Civils and Grinaker Building East, with Group 5 as the lead contractor, this project centered on the construction of various structures, all situated at different locations within the boundaries of the Sappi Saiccor Mill.

Due to tight project deadlines from the client, structures had to be handed over the the mechanical contractors as they were being completed, this meant that double the amount of people were working in the same confined spaces.

The project achieved one million man-hours without a single lost time injury and was placed second in the regional safety awards, while receiving a five-star grading. All challenges considered; the joint venture team managed to deliver a quality product to the client's satisfaction.

HIGHLY COMMENDED PROJECTS

"Sa Bulk Terminals Grain Silos, Phase 2", by Stefanutti & Bressan Building (Pty) Ltd
After the successful completion of phase 1, the south African Bulk Terminals required additional storage capacity (phase 2). This site comprised a 'strip' of approximately 20m x 100m, with an access and lay down area that was restricted. In addition, the safety risk of working in close proximity to the live railway lines was extremely high. Due to this danger and limited working space, the use of conventional shuttering for the walls and staging for the outside cantilever slabs was not possible, and an alternative method had to be found. Therefore, it was decided to investigate the option of casting the 9.9m high hexagonal walls in one lift. The main advantage of this was the reduction in the "critical path" construction time of the walls, which in turn resulted in a reduction in the cost of equipment and labour. The contractor executed this difficult project to the client's satisfaction. It was completed on time and within budget.
