2010 Awards - Alterations, Additions And Renovations UNDER R20m

WINNER

"Westville Mall", by Giuricich Coastal Projects (Pty.) Ltd

Westville Mall is an 8 000sqm community centre that had not seen a revamp for many years, some would say that it was trapped and forgotten in the eighties. When the centre was bought over by Acucapt, the investor saw the value of this little community centre as well as its growth potential by increasing its GLA by 350sqm and giving the centre a complete facelift, not only internally but also externally.

The architecture for the building is stylized and modern. Clip on walkway roofs with exposed steel work soften the strong horizontal concrete façade.  The two entrances again reflect the same roof detailing.  The six main columns are clad with red face brick faggots.

The design and colour in the mall is clean and simple. The horizontal line character of the brick faggot cladding of the external columns are reflective in the timber slatted mall furniture.

Pick ‘n Pay Bluff Centre & Stefanutti Stocks Building KZN
The Pick ‘n Pay Bluff Centre built in 1982, was in need of an upgrade and the owners Ndawonye Props 1003 CC decided to give the entire centre a face lift. The centre continued to trade while construction commenced which brought with it huge safety implications, the biggest risk item being the new structural tower to the main entrance of the mall. Constructed out of a 16 meter steel structure and cladded in balu timber on all four sides, working above the public was going to prove a safety nightmare. This was overcome by diverting foot traffic through fire escapes; safety of the public and tenants was our foremost priority for the duration of the project.
