2010 Awards - HEALTH FACILITIES

WINNER

"Kingsway Hospital – New Oncology Ward" by WBHO (Pty) Ltd

WBHO were appointed to build a new Oncology ward and a new Day ward on the first floor of the hospital directly above the main reception, a pharmacy, admin and a trauma unit.  One of the challenges that had to be overcome was the enclosure of two double openings.  The challenge came in the fact that these openings were directly over the reception and pharmacy entrance.  Careful consideration and planning was required to ensure the safe access of the patients whilst construction was taking place as the areas below were continuously open for business.

In addition to the above, two doctors suites had to remain whilst construction went on around them. No structural work was required to these suites however the ceiling services were upgraded and new ceilings installed in areas. Another challenge was the upgrade to the air-conditioning to the pharmacy, to accommodate this, openings were created directly above the retail section with a minimum shutdown period.
