Not only was Sibaya the overall winner in the Building Excellence Awards for projects constructed in 2005 and winner of the Leisure and Recreation category, the project also won the Associations regional and national safety competitions in 2004. Constructed by WBHO-MEG joint venture, the R359-million contract included a casino, a theatre, cultural village complex, and hotel. |
 | Alterations And Additions winner - Parklands hospital Netcare's slogan "You'll feel better with us" was given added impetus when its project to extend and alter its Parklands Hospital on Durban's Berea won the Alterations and Additions category. WBHO was awarded the contract to upgrade the second-floor wards and handled the work in three phases so as to minimise the number of beds incapacitated at any one time.
Work comprised the complete "strip out" of existing services, demolition, new brickwork, new services plaster and finishes. |
 | commercial winner - Bluff meat supply Valad Construction, which constructed a new meat supply superstore including freezer, cold storage and preparation areas for client, Bluff Meat Supply Superstore, came in for high praise from Bill Howell, the architect who designed the project.
"Valad Construction complied with the contract in every instance, conforming to a budget which by nature was complicated - with an abnormal amount of activities, sub contracts and specialised equipment installation resulting in additional costs. In fact, they went further by sourcing better purchase costs, quotations and rates, passing the benefits on to the client. they also conformed to completion dates which were subject to extentions and a high degree of variations and additional works". |
 | industrial and civils winner - mondi pm31 uwf The winner of the Industrial and Civils category was Mondi Business Paper's PM31 UWF Conversion Project constructed by Blue Sky Civils Joint Venture (BSCJV) made up of Ginaker-LTA, Group Five, Ross Civils and Stefanutti and Bressan.
The major challenge on this project consisting of the civil, building and demolition works for the installation of the new paper machine, was the extremely tight demolition and construction time schedule. |
