2007 Award Winners

Everything definitely "keeps going right" at Toyota, especially as far as Grinaker-LTA is concerned. Having walked away with the Industrial and Civil Engineering Work category award in 2005 for Toyota's AO Pressline, the contractor won the category again in 2007 with its contract for the Toyota Paint Plant 3.

Century casino, the winning project in the Recreation and Leisure category, definitely held all the aces as far as Betts Townsend, project and construction managers of Newcastle's newest casino, were concerned. In a letter accompanying the entry for this project, Betts Townsend noted that the professional and construction team 2C&R, worked as a cohesive unit, performing well and exhibiting a high standard of contract compliance when audited by both the project manager and the KwaZulu-Natal Gaming board.

Having taken its slogan "You'll feel better with us" to heart, Netcare commisioned WBHO, which won the Alterations and Additions Category for its work at Netcare hospital, Parklands, last year, to work its restorative powers on The Bay Hospital at Richards Bay. In the process, WBHO not only won the Health Facility Buildings category for its contract to construct a new three-storey block to house wards and doctors' suites extensions; it was also highly commended in the Alterations and Additions category for the refurbishment and upgrade of the hospital's existing main reception area, admissions section, coffee shop, lift lobbies, parking area and boundary walls.

This project, consntructed by Reed Simpson Construction, was a relatively small one in monetary terms but was crucial in terms of the Durban Country Club's Renaissance Programme, instituted in 2005, to reinvent the club and it's facilities to achieve world class status.

Group 5 certainly proved its metal in achieving the extremely tight 12-month programme for the R113-million extension to Liberty Midlands Mall. And in the process, the company complied with the budgetary and contract requirements, including special conditions set with regard to environmental issues of maintaining a diverted river and working within a busy, fully-operation shopping center.

"The Pearls of Umhlanga" development, just above Umhlanga Rocks' main beach is a landmark development in this coastal resort. Somewhat controversial because of its sheer size and location, the project, nevertheless is one that cannot be ignored in terms of its iconic presence.

Edstan Construction was a joint winner of the award for projects in the Single Residential Buildings category. This contemporary home located in the Nkwazi Ridge Estate at Zinkwazi on KwaZulu-Natal's North Coast satisfied both the client, Watt international, as well as the principal agent, Tarboton Reardon; with Nigel Tarboton describing the finished product as excellent and the contractors relationship with all parties as healthy and amicable. So much so, in fact, that Edstan Construction was engaged on several further projects for Watt International.

Rod's Contruction could almost be a household name at Zimbali Coastal resort and other upmarket residential estates on KwaZulu-Natal's North Coast. Last year the company won the small works category for the gatehouse at Zimbali as well as winning and having three highly commended projects in the Residential Category - one at Zimbali, one at Simbithi, and one on Salt Rock's Beach front. This year, Rod's Contruction was joint winner of the Single Residential Buildings category for House Theron in the Zimbali Coastal Resort Estate.
