Free Service to Members - Safety Star Grading for Sites and Companies

Members of the Association, on request, may have their construction sites star graded on the National Master Builders South Africa (MBSA) Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Star Grading system, at any given time. Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal offers this service free to its members.

Star gradings are performed by Accredited OHS Lead Auditors using the National MBSA OHS audit schedule which consists of the following sections:
 
Administrative & Legal Requirements

• Education, Training & Promotion
• Public Safety & Emergency Preparedness
• Personal Protective Equipment and Clothing
• Housekeeping
• Scaffolding, Formwork & Support work
• Ladders
• Fall Protection
• Electrical Safeguarding
• Emergency / Fire Prevention & Protection
• Demolition
• Excavation
• Tools 
• Cranes
• Material Hoist
• Transport & Material Handling
• Site Plant & Machinery
• Plant & Storage Yards / Site Workshops Specifics
• Workplace, Environment, Health & Hygiene

 Star ratings are awarded as follows:
 
• 5 stars Upward of 90%
• 4 Stars 80% to 89,9%
• 3 Stars 70% to 79,9%
• 2 Stars 60% to 69,9%
• 1 Star 50% to 59,9%

Company Star Grading

Members may also have their entire company star graded, however in order to do so they need to comply with clause 3.6 of the MBSA OHS Policy:

3.6  Any contractor wishing to obtain a star grading for the entire company must submit all current sites, company offices and plant storage yards for grading.  Companies may only display stars awarded on their company stationery if they have complied with the aforementioned.

The process consists of all company's sites, including plant yards being graded. Once completed, the collective average is calculated to provide the companies overall score and in order to maintain this status, they have to be graded annually.
