Construction Industry News and Views Edition 25 - April 2010
|
|
Dear Readers
Do you perform your building and construction work to an excellent standard? Are your clients and the professionals you work with impressed with the end product? Then you should enter our Excellence in Construction Awards. See more below, and get the recognition you deserve for going the extra mile. There can be no better marketing exposure.
Pursuant to our objective of providing relevant and useful information to members, we just completed our March Roadshows. Over 300 members and stakeholders attended the meetings in Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Empangeni and Port Shepstone. We presented information on Joint Ventures, Green Building and updated members on developments and plans in the different regions.
This newsletter is another way in which we keep you up to speed with relevant matters. Please let us know if we are doing that, or if there is something else that you would like to see.
Enjoy Brandon Abdinor | Executive Director

2010 Soccer World Cup Employee Absenteeism
The 2010 Soccer World Cup will no doubt bring disruptions to business through employees focusing on the soccer rather than their jobs. Employers will probably find that there will be unauthorised absenteeism through staff attending or watching soccer matches.

SARB 0.5% Cut Drops Prime Rate to 10%
In a difficult but unanimous decision, the SARB MPC dropped interest rates by 0.5%, with prime falling to 10%, which is the lowest prime has been since 1981. This small further rate reduction should assist the economy's recovery this year and next, with SARB upping its GDP growth forecast for 2010 to 2.6%.

TERMITES: CHOMPING AWAY AT HOME OWNERS
Hailed the silent destroyer, timber destroying subterranean termites also known as white-ants are any home owner's worst nightmare. They often go unnoticed for years without any immediate signs only to be discovered when the damage done is too severe. These termites, however, are not the only ones causing the damage. Various unregistered pest control officers and building contractors are causing major havoc with inadequate and incorrectly applied pre-treatment against these pests.
