Construction Industry News and Views Edition 34 - August 2010

Dear Readers
British Prime Minister and novelist Benjamin Disraeli, is quoted as having said "The Youth of a Nation are the trustees of Posterity." The Industry in which we operate has critical links to skills development, infrastructure creation and service delivery. Youth in Construction 2010 focused on the importance of our industry as a national asset, and was aimed at encouraging the youth of our Province, to choose from the many careers the sector has to offer. The event was a resounding success and hence is this edition's feature article.
'We want a punitive clause in the law, .........You are criminalised " full stop" because you are breaking the law ` these are the words of Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana referring to the possible introduction of equity quotas. Article titled "Minister Threatens to Punish Employment Equity Offenders" gives the full story.
In addition, we also provide a telling analysis of the unemployment stats and touch on good reasons to utilise a project manager. We also notify of a not to be missed Safety Meeting which includes a presentation titled "Women in Construction" to be given by Browyn Gardner, of Grinaker-LTA Building East.
Last but not least, Thomas Tiquin of our Midlands office also makes a guest appearance. Read about how his unrelenting willingness to assist, led to him being surrounded by the police. :)
......Enjoy.

MINISTER THREATENS TO PUNISH EMPLOYMENT EQUITY OFFENDERS
Following the release of the 10th annual report of the Commission of Employment Equity late during July 2010, Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana said that the time had possibly come to introduce employment equity quotas and increasing fines for non-compliance. 'We want a punitive clause in the law, .........You are criminalised " full stop" because you are breaking the law ` he said.

The Spectre of Unemployment
Looking for Work In the aftermath of developments at the ANC Polokwane Conference, there is a prevailing view among certain Economists and Labour Experts that President Jacob Zuma`s Goverment is more pro-labour than that of former President Thabo Mbeki`s administration.
