Construction Industry News and Views Edition 28 - May 2010
|
|
Dear Readers,
The 2010 World Cup is only 21 days away! The vibe is building and it is awesome to see South Africans from every walk of life being enthusiastic, passionate, proud and smiling!
Human Settlements Minister, Tokyo Sexwale, wants the vibe to continue after the soccer is over - but now focussed on delivering affordable, sustainable and dignified human settlements for all South Africans. "Turn the whole country into a big construction site" he says. The programme is called Human Settlements 2030, and we like it. Plenty of work for the industry, and a much needed improvement in the lives of millions. Read more below.
Events like the World Cup also create their own "strike season," with workers using the leverage to pressure employers to accede to their demands. Wage disputes are sporadic in the building industry, happening at the individual workplace level. Read about the drive to introduce a minimum wage in the industry. This will affect you, mostly positively we think, and you can have your say. Read about this and a change to the Basic Conditions of Employment Act below.
Looking for a Joint Venture partner? The details of our Joint Venture Matchmaker programme are covered in this edition and we trust that this innovative service will help your business access work you may previously have found elusive.
And...there is so much more. Enjoy and we hope you find it useful.

Last month the Minister of Human Settlements, Tokyo Sexwale MP, presented the 2010/2011 budget for the Human Settlements Department. Bridge of Hope - Stari Most
Stari Most (English translation: `The Old Bridge`) is a 16th century bridge in the city of Mostar, in Bosnia and Herzegovina spanning the river Neretva and connecting two parts of the city. The structure was commissioned by Suleiman the Magnificent in 1557 to replace an earlier wooden suspension bridge of dubious stability.
