Construction Industry News and Views Edition 38 - September 2010

Dear Readers
"Give me a 4x4, and I will get you a mining license", this according to Nico Pienaar is a standing joke exchanged among business leaders in that industry. Article titled "The Supply Situation of Aggregates and Sand" informs us of how the licensing process works, the extent of corruption that has to be contended with and the ripple effect, it has on the construction sector.
As usual we do our best to provide lots of interesting Industry snippets. These include notification of a public hearing on unskilled labour, JBCC document training as well as an excellent article on tender blacklisting, penned by Alastair Hay. Association member Stedone Hazycrest Projects introduces the Geoplast System and Durban motorists are offered amnesty with a 50% discount, on outstanding traffic fines.
Although an historical piece rather than relating to current industry affairs "The Chrysler Building in New York" is this editions editor's choice. It's always incredibly fascinating to read, how the mavericks of the 30's built colossal super structures that remain iconic, and will for many generations to come.
Enjoy
