Safety Competition 2010 - KwaZulu-Natal Entrants Excel

2010 AjudicatorsThe adjudication process for the 2010 National Construction Industry Health and Safety Competition has been concluded and it gives us immense pleasure to announce that KwaZulu-Natal Province again took the bulk of the spoils.

Of the ten categories that make up the competition, KwaZulu-Natal entrants dominated, achieving eight first place finishes, the eight Winners are:

  1. Plant and Storage Yard: Grinaker-Lta Building East,
  2. Allied Trades: Form Scaff Durban,
  3. Less then 5mil: Patcon Building and Civil Engineering Contractors
  4. 5-20mil: Stefanutti Stocks,
  5. 20-50mil: Stedone Mechanicos Building,
  6. 50-120mil: Grinaker-Lta Building East,
  7. 120-200mil: Grinaker-Lta Building East,
  8. 500mil plus: Stefanutti Stocks,

Entrants are made up of winners from the various regional competitions held throughout the country and this year there were 37 entries with KwaZulu-Natal Province being the only one able, to submit at least one participant in all ten of the categories.

With each Association submitting candidates for nomination, Master Builders South Africa follows a stringent process when appointing a panel of adjudicators and for those who are appointed, it is considered an honour and a privilege.

This year the panel comprised of a coordinator, Neels Nortje’ (Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal), 2 judges Tshepo Moleko (Master Builders South Africa) and Deon Bester (Master Builders Association Western Cape) as well as a neutral person of stature, Tibor Szana. Tibor Szana is a senior inspector from the Department of Labour and was kind enough to make himself available as much as possible.

Judging took place from 26 July to 27 August and standards were extremely high. Scores averaged in excess of 90% prompting Tibor Szana to go on record stating that this competition is phenomenal.

To ensure fairness and impartiality, results are ratified at a national meeting allowing the various Associations’ the opportunity to lodge objections should they have any. Once this formality is concluded, the winners are made public.

Awards are to be handed out at a special MBSA Safety award function to be held on 17 November 2010 at a venue in Cape Town hosted by Master Builders Western Cape. Our winners are to receive further recognition at the Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal Regional Safety Awards Function, to be held at our newly renovated Green Building in Westville, on 1 October 2010.

Congratulations all participants, your commitment to Industry Health and Safety is nothing short of praiseworthy.
