Construction Industry News and Views Edition 36 - September 2010

Dear Readers
The SafeBuild DVD series project admittedly took a lot longer to complete than initially anticipated, the reason for it was that we were looking to produce a single comprehensive, up-to-date video training resource for the South African Construction Industry and simply weren't prepared, to compromise on standards. We are tremendously satisfied with the end result and are pleased to report that they are already flying off the shelf, this editions lead article is our SafeBuild DVD press release.
Pieter Rautenbach informs us that liquidations are considerably down which may be indicative of an economy on the mend, while Karen de Kock-Wentzel, Head of Annuities at Sanlam Structured Solutions, shares with us 10 tips that can lead to a happier and more financially secure retirement.
With regard to The Protected Disclosures Act, Bruce Lyle sheds some light on whistle blowing in the work place and we also take the opportunity to welcome our new members and to provide you with an update, on our new and improved conference facilities.
Lastly, for those who are interested in the latest addition to our somewhat crowded roof, read about our newly installed weather station which can be seen mounted above the roof garden, not too far from the jojo bins, beneath the wind turbines, to the right of the photovoltaic panels and alongside the purposely built structure where the clean energy storage batteries are housed.
........Enjoy

Whistleblowing In The Workplace
The Protected Disclosures Act
Whistleblowing is the raising of a concern about wrongdoing within an organisation or community. The danger of whistleblowing is usually in proportion to an organisation's culture of resisting transparency and accountability and whistleblowers often risk victimisation, vilification, reprisals and sometimes dismissal.

Weather Station Goes Live
Today the weather in Westville is partly cloudy to mild with a likelihood of strong wind in the afternoon. I know this because I felt the stiff breeze and saw plenty of cloud, when I was on the roof earlier taking photo's of our new weather station.
