Dear Members & Readers
You are reading the 50th edition of our e-mail newsletter. The newsletter now has just under 3000 subscribers and is truly evolving to be a sound platform for getting information and our message out there...as well as your message if you take up any of our well-priced advertising packages. Speak to Tanya (031 266 7070) for details.
Virtually all that we do involves people. Construction work is performed by people (collaborating with other people) for other people. We have two people-focused stories this week - read them and see the industry through other eyes. There is much to be gained from bringing a new perspective to familiar activities. We also bring you up to speed on our Zululand social responsibility project.
Our new coffee shop is open, and by polling staff and members for input (thank you!) we have decided to name the coffee shop Café Indaba. Indaba means "a meeting to discuss a serious matter." Hopefully we will also see a lot of not so serious discussions taking place at the café, but the idea is that you now have a place to get some sustenance while you talk, or even while you are quiet.
We also inform you about steel shortages, the new Electrical Machinery Regulations and the Draft Driven Machinery Regulations.
Please enjoy.

The Reasoning Behind Mandatory Safety Checks
There have been some enquiries as to the reasoning behind the decision we took to make safety checks mandatory. To clarify, the safety check is part of a greater initiative that we call the Best Practice Model, which was adopted by the Executive Council around two years ago. The model arose out of two compelling needs that have been identified:
