Member Makes a Difference in His Community

Association member Greg Downs of Greg Downs Construction, was recently the focus of an article on page 3 of The Natal Witness titled “Boughton’s  Pride; Residents Hail Traffic Island Facelift”

The article centres on Greg having embarked upon an initiative to clean up a neighbourhood traffic island in the quite suburb of  Boughton Pietermaritzburg, at his own expense.

The Witness reports that he did so to raise standards for his kids. “It’s sad to drive around with your kids when everything around you is filthy, I don’t want them to think its normal” says Downs.

He further added “I don’t want to be classified as a moaner, rather than someone who is doing something. My dream is for business people to come together and do something that we can be proud of, in the city”.      

Work included trimming the edges, cleaning out the drains and mowing grass that had grown to a meter in length, kerbstones were also painted yellow and white.

His willingness to make a difference in his community has not gone unnoticed by neighbours. Besides having received letters of appreciation, folks have as a means of saying thank you, taken to hooting when they drive past his home.
