When feeling aggrieved over matters relating to finance, insurance and banking, one may feel that they have no recourse when in fact there are a number of statutory and regulatory bodies that observe these sectors. To report misconduct, note the following contact details:  

With banking problems:

Ombudsman for Banking Services

Resolves complaints by investigating matters according to the rules of the scheme. If the matter has not been resolved by negotiation after investigation, a formal decision may be taken. The decision may be in the form of a determination that is binding on the bank or a recommendation that is not.

With consumer-related problems:

The National Consumer Commissioner is Mamodupi Mohlala

With credit transaction queries:

The Credit Ombud is Manie van Schalkwyk

With debt counselling problems:

The National Credit Regulator also deals with disputes that are not resolved by the Credit Ombud.

With fiduciary problems:

The Fiduciary Institute of South Africa (FISA) is a self-regulating body in fiduciary matters, such as wills, trusts and estate planning.

With Financial Advise problems:

The Ombud for Financial Services Providers is Noluntu Barn.

With Investment problems:

The Financial Services Board, which is headed by Dube Tshidi, regulates the financial services industry.

With Life Assurance problems:

The Ombudsman for Long-term Insurance is Justice Brian Galgut.

With Medical Scheme problems:

The Council for Medical Schemes is a statutory body that supervises medical schemes.

With Pension Fund problems:

The Acting Pension Fund Adjudicator is Dr Elmarie de la Rey.

With Short term insurance problems:

The ombudsman for Short-term Insurance is Brian Martin.
