Hiv/Aids And The South African Construction Industry: A National Survey Of Construction Industry Responses To The Disease

Dear Construction Industry Colleague

How is the HIV/AIDS pandemic affecting our construction industry?  What steps are being taken to combat the disease?  To what extent are construction firms offering awareness, prevention and treatment programmes to their employees?  How effective are these programmes?  What role does stigma play?

Following a very successful pilot study involving 30 firms in the Western Cape, the Department of Construction Economics and Management at the University of Cape Town has embarked on a national project to establish the nature and extent of HIV/AIDS treatment programmes in the SA construction industry.

The survey deals with issues such as: contextual demographic data; the perceived threat of HIV/AIDS to the industry; the presence within firms of awareness, prevention and treatment programmes; the nature and extent of treatment programmes; the effectiveness of treatment programmes; and the financial viability of treatment programmes.

The questions are topical and relevant to all who are concerned about the well-being of our industry.

Please record your views by linking to the questionnaire located at the following website. This survey is entirely web-based and the results are captured and processed electronically. The questionnaire can be found at the following URL.

Please call 021 – 650 3445 if you have any queries.

Kindly complete the survey by Friday 11th March 2011 if at all possible.

Thank you for taking the time and effort to participate in this survey. Individual responses will remain anonymous, as the results will be published in aggregate form only. The information you provide will be treated with the utmost confidentiality.
