2Nd SOUTH COAST DEEP SEA FISHING COMPETITION
At daybreak on Saturday morning the weather did not look favourable and it was feared that boats would remain on their trailers. Fortunately the wind did to some extent calm down permitting the tower to give enthusiasts the go ahead to launch. Brave men pitched in their Blue Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal shirts to make the most of the opportunity to muscle in some fish and to hopefully take the trophy home with them. The smaller boats wisely did not risk the conditions choosing rather to wait it out on Sunday when better weather was forecasted. At the briefing everybody was invited to join the handful of Rock & Surf contenders, should they have assessed it to be the safer option. The wind was howling furiously and the rock & surf fishing proved extremely challenging, only two fish were caught and weighed in on the Saturday.
On Sunday morning there was great excitement among all teams as the tower announced conditions safe for launching. The morning calm was broken by the roar of boat engines as the fumes of two stroke fuel hung in the air, boats soon disappeared over the horizon. The team from Glacier Construction were lucky enough to be onboard the brand new Ocean Dream on its maiden voyage, they weren't however that lucky when it came to the fish.
The rock & surf guys showed great enthusiasm with little fortune, Thys was only contender to show something for his efforts, a 1.4 kg Bronze bream which proved the winning catch.
With competition closing at 14:00, albeit that some boats were unsuccessful in catching anything, participants attended the weigh in with great anticipation, the scoreboard was calculated and prize giving commenced.
Sponsors once again confirmed their support with the value of donations worth R41 000.00. Our regional chairman Thys Blom made it known that it's especially during difficult economic times like these that people sit up and take notice of those who are looking after them. He encouraged members and everybody present to note who the sponsors are, and to make sure we support those who support us.
