Dear Members & Readers
This week's edition of our newsletter, features some great contributions by our Regional Managers.
Gareth Roberts is our Midlands Membership Services Manager and part of his mandate is to assist Members to comply with Health & Safety legislation and regulations. His article and approach focuses largely on the practical implementation of Safety on a construction site.
Hans Stols holds the same position and looks after our South Coast Members. He has some very pertinent information and observations to share with regard to the value of being a Member of the Association.
Paula Leah is our Zululand Membership Services Manager. She has also initiated and spearheaded our new Mobile Medical Clinic, which we will be launching in May to do medical screening tests. In her article, Paula gives some insights into the services the Mobile unit will be providing.
We hope you enjoy this edition of our newsletter. For those of you who are still on holiday, please drive carefully.

Managers Mistakes - A Hard hat is Not enough
It's seems so often that we are faced with the situation of having to convince an owner or manager of a construction business that there is more to health and safety than hard hats and safety boots.

Labour Unrest & More - South Coast News
Prominent Association member Ray Basson furnished us with details of a labour rate dispute his company recently encountered while working on a project on KwaZulu-Natal's South Coast. A Costly "Slap in the Face".
It happens that tense and confrontational situations in the workplace between employers and employees arise.
This is a tale about such an event which commenced on 1 April 2002 when a travel luggage firm acquired new owners. While this hardly started out as an April fool`s joke it was only brought to a costly closure on 29 June 2007 in the Labour Appeal Court ---- more than five years later.

The Days of Reconciliation
For many the word "Reconciliation" is identified with the "Day Of Reconciliation" which takes place on the 16th of December each year.

SARS - Construction Sector Under the Microscope
Many would have seen today's front page article in the Mercury titled 'Gordhan's warning to tax defaulters'.
The article reports that government will soon be implementing stringent measures in order to reign in tax defaulters and while they acknowledge that there has been an improvement on overall tax compliance, trends indicate that constant monitoring is a necessity.

In this segment, we bring you yet another great example of death by stupidity. The author of the worldwide welding web page makes it known that in order to protect oneself from harm, a welder has to always give thought to what he is doing. He has this theory that the reason why welders become welders in the first place, is because thinking isn't among their strengths and according to him, therein lies the problem.
