Midlands Regional Round Up - January 2012
The Midlands Region has begun 2012 with a hive of activity and the stage being set for a busy year ahead. We are seeing some decent contracts being awarded and with the promise of more to come, it looks like 2012 is going to be a better year than 2011. Red tape having been dispensed with, the Donnybrook Police Station project is finally underway. Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal has been appointed as the clients' Health and Safety Agent so exciting times lie ahead. This will be a 24 month assignment with us having close to 50 planned site inspections over this period. We look forward to working on this project with contractor Rambros Construction.
Midlands Region has also experienced its fair share of difficult times with the passing of one of our founding members Eddie Hall (of AG Hall CC), towards the end of 2011. It's never easy to accept the loss of an industry legend and many will agree that Eddie Hall was one of the greats. Adding a bitter sweet moment to this difficult period for the family, AG Hall CC celebrated its 110th year since opening its doors, having been in the family for six generations. Until Eddie's recent passing there were 3 generations of Hall family members employed by the company. The Midlands Region says well done to all at AG Hall and we wish you the very best for the next 110 years.
If all that went on over the Christmas period wasn't enough, in January tragedy struck, when a fully loaded truck lost control on Town Hill and went crashing through fencing and car, before finally coming to a stop inside of Liberty Midlands Mall after smashing into the structure. ABSA Bank staff arrived at work the next morning surprised to find a huge big gaping hole in the side of their offices. Construction and repairs began 48 hours later when Avenge Scaffolding and boarding, first appeared at the site.
Our Midlands Members are urged to keep an eye out for Association emails as February in our Region promises to be a busy month. Most exciting among this will be the February training calendar which will include the following:
- First Aid Training - 3+4 February
- Scaffolding Workshop - 10 February
- Safety Supervisors Course - 25 February
April and May training will include our first Labour Relations Workshop and JBCC training will follow soon thereafter. We are planning to make 2012 a very productive training year, so please watch those emails.
Over the next 6 months we will be calling on members as a courtesy visit, to ensure that everybody is getting the most from their membership. There are a number of services we provide, many of which are free of charge, which perhaps some aren't aware of. Please keep in mind that our staff are there to help, so should you need us, please feel free to call anytime.
