Owen Peters Construction

WINNER: OWEN PETERS CONSTRUCTION, "KOKSTAD PRIVATE HOSPITAL"

In order to assist in maintaining cool temperatures as well as to house a 30 000 liter water reservoir, the structure was purposely designed to incorporate a concrete roof sturdily supported on concrete beams.

Skylighting was also integrated to bring in natural light as well as to help save on electricity consumption.

Challenges that were successfully overcome:

  • The majority of labour was unskilled
  • Limited number of skilled carpenters available in the area.
  • Materials unavailable locally had to be sourced from Durban and Johannesburg.
  • Abnormal rainfall patterns resulted in delays.
  • Although the above posed real threats to the projected date of completion, many hours of overtime worked ensured that deadlines were timeously met.
