WINNER: STEFANUTTI STOCKS LADYSMITH CONSTRUCTION JV - SUNRISE PHASE 1 & 2
This unique, multidisciplinary building contract to extend an existing and develop a new tyre manufacturing plant for Sumitomo Rubber South Africa (Pty) Ltd in Ladysmith was undertaken by a joint venture consisting of Stefanutti Stocks Building KZN (75%) and Ladysmith Construction (25%).The project, known as "Project Sunrise" included the construction of eleven individual buildings ranging from small brickwork ablutions, to a robust four-floor, 30-metre-high mixer building - the top deck of which required staging 25-metres high in one area. The different construction methods implemented on the project included lightweight steel structure construction; conventional brickwork and mortar buildings; heavy industrial concrete structures; structural steel structures and tilt up construction.
HIGHLY COMMENDED 1: ROBERTSON & POOLE CONSTRUCTION - HULAMIN TRC
The scope of work on this project was the extension of Hulamin TRC for new furnace and plant. The program was tight with a goal to have the furnace foundation complete and the roof over half of the area before the furnace and installation team arrived from Austria. The accuracy level was high with 2mm allowable tolerances on the 80 base plates on which the furnace was installed. The continuing of business on the premises, safety management for work on buildings at height and several specialist sub-contractors. The furnace itself when fully assembled and installed weighs over 920 tonnes.
HIGHLY COMMENDED 2: P & G CONSTRUCTION- SEAHORSE
This contract was awarded by an insurance company to P & G to save the apartment block from being demolished. The building was breaking up due to being built with no expansion joints. The building was cut into sections to allow for expansion and then refurbished. This was an extremely challenging and complex operation and the apartment prices have increased remarkably since the repairs.
