Operating a sustainable business within the KZN Building Industry, which is also compliant with the complex regulatory framework is challenging.

Members are reminded that the Association has the capacity, infrastructure and experience to assist with most matters which affect or members. Our offices are strategically located in Westville, Shelly Beach, Pietermaritzburg, Empangeni and Newcastle ensuring that members are supported across the entire province.

Of grave concern to the Association is that several members have been struck off for non-payment arising from closures and financial constraints. Issues of delayed or non-payment from government departments as well as from private sector clients are continuously being reported.

In the Midlands area, the Association attended a commercial property forum meeting at the Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business. The consensus was that the Pietermaritzburg and Midlands areas were faced with severe municipal challenges that was slowing down economic growth, as a result of long delays in granting of rates clearance certificates by the Msunduzi Municipality. Some delays have extended beyond 12 to 18 months especially on commercial property. Channels of communication have been established with the municipality to help smooth out the process. Members who are experiencing rates clearance challenges in the Midlands may contact our Midlands office for assistance in expediting their enquiries.

In Northern Natal and Zululand, the uptake for the Association’s Emerging Contractor programme was extremely encouraging and the programme is currently in the mentorship phase. The Association has provided ongoing assistance in ensuring that participants are fully compliant and that they have all the necessary registrations. From the mentorship phase, participants move into the adopt a company phase where they are linked to companies for a six-month period in order to assist the emerging contractor to develop further business acumen. If you are interested in participating by adopting a company, please contact our offices.

Members are reminded that the Association will be hosting workshops for members presented by Cox Yeats Attorneys on the Good Practice Note, a guideline on the implementation of the Construction Sector Code and Preferential Procurement Regulations. Look out for your invite!
