The Pietermaritzburg based company is an industry leader in Light Steel Frame (LSF) construction and are the recipients of numerous Awards of Excellence. 

Staying true to their passion for breaking boundaries Shospec recently undertook to renovate a structure from the war years using Light Steel Frame Design.

The 80-year old house set in an established Durban suburb was transformed into a double-story masterpiece, showcasing how Light Steel Frame can be used to enhance an existing structure in a short space of time and with minimal noise, mess and disruption.

Although one of Shospec’s smaller projects, the first-floor extension, totalling 168m2, including balconies is an impressive structure with just 3 months required from start to completion. Whilst light on the old existing foundations, the LSF structure was strong enough to support a natural stone floor.  

The light steel frame also allowed for the use of extraordinarily large windows to flood the space with light while exposing it to spectacular sky and sea views.  It also created a free flow of air to counter Durban’s humidity and in an area where wood borer is a problem, the resilience of LSF to the degenerative effects of borer termites and wood rot is an added bonus.

While the use of LSF enabled Shospec to timeously meet the client’s brief, it also proved to be an intelligent solution to the many challenges that extensions of this nature present without compromising on style and functionality.
