Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal Training Academy is accredited to offer the National Certificate: Construction Health and Safety. Delegates who complete this qualification will be equipped to work in the construction industry with a broad understanding and knowledge of Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental legislation and controls.  They will also be able to responsibly, independently and effectively manage health and safety issues on a construction site. Furthermore, graduates will be able to perform essential functions that promote a safe working culture.

The qualification consists of the following modules:

  • Apply health and safety to a work area (Safety, Health and Environmental Representative i.e. SHE Rep)
  • Work in confined spaces on construction sites
  • Conduct a continuous risk assessment in a workplace (Hazard identification and risk assessment i.e. HIRA)
  • Conduct an investigation into workplace incidents
  • Demonstrate knowledge pertaining to the preparation, conducting, recording and follow-up actions of a planned task observation in a workplace.
  • Implement safety procedures for open hole or deep excavations
  • Monitor, report and advise on the application of safety and health principles regarding the movement of people and materials in and around a workplace
  • Monitor, report and make recommendations pertaining to specified requirements in terms of working at heights
  • Provide primary emergency care or first aid as an advanced first responder (First Aid)
  • Perform Basic Fire Fighting
  • Respond to, implement and manage emergencies according to an emergency action plan in a workplace
  • Conduct a Task Analysis and take appropriate action to address identified risks
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of relevant current occupational health and safety legislation (Legal Liability & Construction Regulations)
  • Monitor and make recommendations on the application of health and safety principles regarding hazardous substances in the workplace
  • Monitor and make recommendations on the application of health and safety principles regarding lifting equipment in the workplace
  • Monitor and make recommendations on the application of health and safety principles regarding pressure vessels and pressure systems in the workplace
  • Measure noise levels, and take appropriate action
  • Demonstrate an understanding and implement environmental initiatives on a construction project
  • Health and Safety Officer Skills Programme

 The options for acquiring these skills and competencies are:

  • Individual unit standard
  • 10-day skills programme
  • One-year learnership

Training can be conducted face-to-face, online or at client sites.
