Many construction workers acquire various skills whilst working. These skills are however not often recognised because no formal assessment has taken place. The many quality structures that have been constructed around us are evidence of the available skills.

Following consultation with employers, Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal has made available a mechanism through which the skill set of an individual may be assessed and recognised.

Members of the Association are encouraged to identify candidates from amongst their workforce to participate in this process, which will serve not only to enhance the morale of workers, but also to increase their productivity. It is proven that when workers experience recognition, their productivity increases.

The assessment process is as follows:

  • The employer identifies workers for assessment and recommends them to undergo the assessment.
  • A simple Portfolio of Evidence providing evidence of work done by the employee is completed and submitted together with a CV – a template will be provided.
  • Based on the skills identified for assessment, a quotation will be provided. The cost will be based on the number of days that it will take to assess the candidate.
  • The candidate will undergo assessment to prove competency in the identified skill(s).

A Skills Card will be issued, specifying the tasks for which the candidate has been deemed competent.

This facility is available for all trades and tasks within the construction sector.
