Training and development is vital for sustainable business growth and success. Training programmes enable employees to learn specific skills and knowledge that improves their job performance whilst development programmes target overall employee growth within the organisation. In today’s complex work environment, employees are required to be skilled in performing their tasks. An organisation would conduct a training needs analysis (TNA) which identifies the training and development needs of its employees to ensure that their work is done effectively. Training needs analysis occurs at three levels which includes the organisation holistically, the operational departments and the individual.

Training needs analysis assists organisations in identifying knowledge and skills gaps before it becomes a major problem and having the likelihood of costing the organisation considerably. The TNA process highlights potential problem areas within the department to which training and development needs would be identified and implemented. Progress in terms of performance will be monitored to determine if the training has made a difference within the department. The TNA process also allows organisations to plan training for the upcoming year, making it easier to schedule and roll out training.

The TNA process includes understanding the organisation's goals and the way forward in achieving such goals by getting up to date with relevant training, identifying discrepancies between current skills and the skills required to take the organisation forward in the future. This process also contributes towards the improvement of the overall performance of departments and individuals.
