Construction Industry News and Views Edition 205 04 July 2022

Dear Members and Readers

Congratulations to Marcus Peter Gonzalves of FS Gonzalves Construction who was designated as the President of Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal at its 121st Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on 28 June 2022. He served as Chairman of the South Coast Committee for several years, was a Member of the Executive Council since July 2011 and also served as an Office Bearer of the Association.

The President pledged his commitment and dedication to the Association and the industry at large and indicated: “Under my leadership, I will certainly strive towards vigorously pursuing a sustainable construction industry as we participate in the rebuilding process.”

He took the opportunity to thank and salute the outgoing President, Bhekisisa Samson Ngcongo for his outstanding leadership and successful term of Presidency as he braced the ‘unchartered territory’. “Members can rest assured that the Association is in good hands. It has the necessary capacity and resources to brace the turbulent waters and will certainly ride the crest of the waves that come with it,” added Bhekisisa Samson Ngcongo.

It was pleasing to note that the Association received an unqualified audit report for the 2021/2022 financial year. Notwithstanding tough trading conditions, the Association closed the financial year with 715 members, reflecting increased growth in the Small Business Member category.

Congratulations to the Executive Council for the next term of office:

Tribute to John Osler

The Association was deeply saddened by the passing of John Osler, who served the construction industry for many years and never wavered in his commitment and dedication to the industry.

John Osler was a Past President of Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal Executive Council, an industry veteran, with some 60 years of experience in the construction industry both in S.A and the U.K. and he was a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building (F.C.I.O.B).

John served as a Trustee on the KZN Building Industry Retirement Fund Boards for over 20 years. He was appointed as the Principal Officer of the Midlands Retirement Fund from 2012, until his recent resignation due to ill health in December 2021. During his time, he was also instrumental in his role as Chairperson of the various sub-committees.

One of our fondest memories of John was in 2016 when he proposed a toast to the Association to celebrate its 115th anniversary at the Annual Awards event held at the Durban ICC. A man of stature who proudly displayed his Past President badge, he was always a great ambassador for Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal.

John was a humble and well-respected gentleman and an amazing role model for all of us. Most importantly, he was a pillar of strength for his family and friends. His immense generosity will always be remembered.

He built special relationships with all of us and we valued his leadership. John was a remarkable legend and we will always have the deepest admiration for him. We salute his greatness!

May his soul rest in peace!
