Sustainable construction practices are increasingly gaining attention in South Africa as the country grapples with the challenges of infrastructure development and climate change. According to Bloomberg, South Africa is the 12th biggest source of greenhouse gases with the construction industry being one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. It is critical that the industry takes a more sustainable approach to building in order to reduce its environmental impact and create a better future. What is Sustainable Construction?
Sustainable construction is a practice that aims to minimise the negative environmental impact of buildings and infrastructure, while also considering the social and economic impact of construction. The seven principles of sustainable construction include sustainable design, durability, energy efficiency, waste reduction, indoor air quality, water conservation and sustainable building materials (Buildpass 2021). The concept of green building is closely linked to sustainable construction. The objective of green building is to create resource-efficient buildings that are environmentally responsible and healthy for occupants. The Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA) is the leading authority on green building certification in South Africa. Amongst many consumers in South Africa, due to the current infrastructure issues in the country, the concept of sustainable construction is mistaken as entailing off-grid power and water supplies. The Benefits of Sustainable Construction The benefits of sustainable construction practices are for both societies at large and the environment. They help to reduce emissions of harmful gases, save natural resources and create healthier living environments. If designed correctly, sustainable construction practices can improve the longevity of buildings and reduce long-term maintenance costs. In the event that the demand for sustainable construction continues to rise, it would also help to stimulate economic growth and create jobs. The need for design professionals, contractors and suppliers would create new employment opportunities and boost economies. Challenges and Opportunities Sustainable construction in South Africa is still in the process of development through sustainable building practices and policies. The current challenges include the high costs of both sustainable materials and technology. As with any developing practice, the early adopters are currently facing the brunt of these costs. To accelerate the adoption of sustainable construction, increased awareness and knowledge amongst stakeholders and more supportive policies and regulatory frameworks are required. By adopting sustainable construction, South Africa will not only reduce its carbon footprint but could also stimulate the local economy and create more jobs. Conclusion Sustainable construction practices are not only a means of creating a healthy environment for current inhabitants of our country but will assist in preservation of the environment for generations to come.
