The construction industry contributes significantly to global infrastructure development and economic growth. Unfortunately, due to climate change, South Africa has experienced inclement weather, which has created a considerable barrier to development projects, especially along the coast. One of the key issues caused by unpredictable weather in the construction industry is project and supply delays. Many construction sites in parts of South Africa have been seriously affected, making it impossible for workers and machinery to operate efficiently. Gale-force winds pose safety risks for workers and can lead to potential damage to structures under construction and can halt construction activities. Construction projects incur additional costs due to unpredictable weather, especially if planning and resource allocation are insufficient. Delays in the construction schedule can result in higher labour costs, extended equipment rental periods and additional expenses to address any damage that occurs. Construction companies may also require weatherproofing materials, temporary shelters, or specialised equipment to continue work during severe weather. Companies can take several steps to reduce the consequences of unpredictable weather on construction projects. First and foremost, significant risk assessment and planning are required to forecast potential weather-related issues and to develop contingency plans. Weather tracking and partnering with weather authorities can provide real-time updates and early warnings, allowing more informed decisions to be made. In conclusion, harsh weather presents a substantial problem to the construction industry affecting project timeframes and finances. Companies can prepare adequately for changing weather conditions by using planning technology and resilient construction methods. Building resilience to variable weather is critical for the sustainability and success of construction projects. Paula Leah Membership Manager
