Multi-factor authentication & why we need it

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is rapidly becoming standard practice across various online systems and processing modules. Essentially, it is a security measure that requires users to provide multiple forms of identification to access an account or system. By adding an extra layer of protection beyond just a password, MFA significantly reduces the likelihood of unauthorised users gaining access, even if they have managed to steal or guess the password.

MFA requires users to present at least two "factors" of authentication. This is typically achieved by downloading and setting up an authenticator app that generates one-time passwords. In practice, once it is set up, all that is required is to open the app, view the password and enter it along with your other login details, when logging in.

Why people should use MFA:

Enhanced Security:
Reduces the risk of access when passwords are compromised.

Protection Against Phishing:
MFA makes it harder for attackers to succeed with phishing attacks, where users are tricked into entering their credentials on a fake website.

Reduced Risk of Account Takeovers:

By requiring multiple factors, MFA makes it much more difficult for hackers to take control of user accounts.

Protection from Password Re-use:
If a user re-uses passwords across multiple accounts, MFA can limit the damage from a single breach.

Peace of Mind:
Knowing that accounts are more secure can give users greater peace of mind when using online services.

Mitigating Corporate Risk
The adoption of MFA across various industries helps mitigate risks, especially for those handling sensitive financial or personal information.
